CROSS COUNTRY
Skrevet: 17 SEPTEMBER 2003

As I'm writing this I've completed 21,2 out of the total 37 hours required of cross country in phase 3. So far I've flown close to 3300 km (1830 NM) across North and South Carolina. This phase is meant for us to build more experience before we start our instrument training. The idea itself is good enough, though it can be very frustrating when the weather isn't being cooperative. The 37 hours HAS to be completed (including a long one (200 NM from Conway)) before we can start the instrument trainng, and I know of several past students who have been grounded for over a month waiting for better weather. It doesn't look like we'll have that problem to that degree, and I hope to be finished with the phase by the end of next week (always an optimist!).

Below you can see a map with all routes plotted in.

Of course I had to go back to Maxton to take some pictures and do some filming. Incredible to walk around these huge old planes. I think there's around 10 727's, 2 DC-10's and 3 747's here. Seems like they're all from Northwest. I've heard something about one of the Jumbo's being amongst the first in service. In many ways sad to see these wonderful machines just standing here falling apart.

On the ground at Columbia, the biggest airport I've landed at so far. The picture show a Citation and a Navy jet in front of Eagle Aviation (where I refueled). I talked to one of the navy pilots. I asked if he flew the jet outside. He replied "that old piece of shit?", but quickly agreed that it was better than my 152.

On the ground at Hilton Head, a richmans island just outside Savannah. The businessjets are lined up, so that all the rich people can get to and from their beachhouses. A lovely place, too bad I didn't get to see the whole island. I'll probably fly back down again soon and have lunch!

On my way home from Hilton Head I passed Charleston where there's a aircraft carrier on display. I of course initiated a dive from 3500 feet to 1300 to take some pictures of it!

The pictures is taken on the way down to Hilton Head. I followed the coast all the way down. Started during sunrise. Fantastic flight. Just had to trim the plane, lean back and enjoy the view.

On the way home from Columbia over Lake Marion. Cumulus clouds building over the coast.
