DAYTRIP TO CHARLESTON
Written: 18 JANUARY 2004

We decided to take a break from reading and go on a trip yesterday, so we jumped in the car and headed for Charleston. Charleston is a little over one and a half hours driving south of here, and everybody we have talked to that have been there recommended a trip down there. The wheels were rolling a little over 8 yesterday morning and we reached Charleston a little before 10.

First stop was the "Hunley" museum, which was the first submarine to sink another ship. It was a southern submarine in "The Civil War". The sub is conserved in a tank at an old Naval Base. Jay which is one of the instructors here at the school was there as a part of a reenactment, where they dress up in old confederate uniforms (see picture).

After this we went to see USS Yorktown which is a well known aircraft carrier from World War 2. The carrier is filled with alot of different airplanes, and we had a great time as we were exploring it. The plane used in the movie Topgun was dispayed here.

We had lunch in the center of Charleston and wandered around for several hours in the cosy streets. We found an old brewery where me and Kristian enjoyed beertasting before we headed back towards Myrtle Beach. We had dinner at TGI Fridays before we ended the night at Martini & Cigar Bar at Broadway (a tourist trap at Myrtle Beach).

This was a great break in the hectic period we are in. Alot if reading in the weeks ahead to prepare for the last 4 checkrides before we graduate from the school.
