VACATION
Written: 28 JUNE 2004

I've finally started my long awaited vacation. A whole week off from work and my family have arrived Naples. It's not easy to get time off here, and I was lucky to get some time off as it is getting rather busy here.

Last Tuesday (22 June) we were out celebrating. Alot to celebrate: 21 June, my birthday and Anders last day at work, 22 June, Bernts 21st birthday. We started it off with dinner at Olive Garden and moved on down to downtown where we stayed to they closed up for the night. We don't really have alot of opportunities to go out and have fun, cause we have to be at work every day at 0800, but we managed to get time off till 1200 which left us with more options.

Thursday I went on an IFR cross country to Miami and Key West with Bruno who is doing his instrument rating at the moment. Miami International is a rather big airport with 3 parallel runways and one intersecting. In Miami we went to the FSDO to convert his Croatian license to an American one. Of course we showed up in the middle of their lunchbreak, so we had to hang around for a while.

Right after take off from Miami I heard my family's plane get it's landing clearance from tower. Funny coincidence that we happened to be there at the same time. The flew in with an A330 MyTravel direct from Oslo. I quickly understood that it was the right plane, cause the callsign was "Viking" and the pilot had a Danish accent.

From Miami we flew down to Key West where we went on a short trip downtown before heading back to Naples. I was a bit eager to get home to see my family, but it turned out that they had problems with both getting their rentalcar and getting out of the traffic jam out of Miami, so they got in a little late.

As I mentioned July is supposed to be rather busy, which is good. Alot of students means alot of time in the air. I have two students starting next week and two starting the following week. Other than that, I have Bruno full time and a couple of guys part time. Charles went home yesterday after passing his checkride on Friday.

Approaching Miami Intl. We came in parallel with a Continental 757.

Right after take off from rwy 12. The runway under the wing is where my family landed minutes after.

The sunsets here can be rather impressing, but can be difficult to capture. This one however came out pretty well.

That's alot of students, so it'll be good for me to have a week off to recharge my batteries. On Wednesday we're driving up to Cape Canaveral to see a launch (unless it's delayed), then we're stopping by Universal Studios on Thurday.

On a different note:
I will strongly recommend people to see Michael Moore's new documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11. It premiered here in the States on Friday with long ques at the cinema. The movie is not shown at the biggest cinema here in Naples, probably because the owers are republicans. The movie puts him and his government in a rather bad light, and it all seems fairly well documented. The Americans in the theater seemed rather unsatisfied with Bush, so it'll be exciting to see what happens in the elections this Fall.
