FLIGHT TO FAGERNES
Written: 05 JUNE 2006

Kristian and I have been talking for a while about flying up to Fagernes Airport Leirin, which supposedly is the airport with highest elevation in Norway (approx 2700 feet). Today we finally had time, good weather and an airplane.

Fagernes is not normally that busy, but it can be alot of airplanes here when the tourists invade us during the winter season. Even 757s lands here with charter tourists wanting to ski. Thus the runway is rather big for an airport this small. There are also alot of business jets in the season, as there are several winter paradises around here.

We departed Hamar "Airport" Stafsberg around 2pm and headed westwards with me in the driverseat and Kristian as the navigator/radio operator. The weather was great with some clouds around 8000 feet. We had filed a flightplan, which tells the controllers that we are coming, where we are going, when and how. In Norway this can be done over the internet, which works really well. After departure from Hamar we contacted Oslo Control whom we stayed with until we changed to Fagernes AFIS. He seemed to be happy about the fact that we came, as the voice that greated us was a very jolly one. When we got to Bagn we followed the valley North West and landed on Runway 33.

After an hour eating cup-cakes and drinking hot chocholate, we were ready for take-off, this time with Kristian behind the weel. The flight took us 45 minutes each way including taxi.
