THEORY FINISHED
Skrevet: 14 FEBRUARY 2008

After 6 weeks in Bodø I´ve finished the theoretical part of the course, and I´ve now just over a week off before I start the simulator training at Gardermoen. The course has been eventful and well planned with alot of enthusiastic instructors.

The first two weeks consisted of the technical course for the Dash 8, both 100 and 300 series. This of course ended with an exam which everybody passed without any problems. In addition we had an exam in performance, but that was it for exams and tests during the course.

In addition to the technical course there were alot of other coures in accordance with the regulations. We had a fire course together with the December course. We thoroughly went through the OM (Flight Operations Manual and Aeroplane Operating Manual) which are the documents where the procedures are described. These are specific for the company and will be central in the preparations before the simulator traning.

We tried out all the emergency equipment like lifevest, smoke hood, megaphone, oxygen mask and the emergency exits. We had half a day in the cabin simulator together with a bunch of other pilots and cabin crew. The cabin simulator is a full cabin on a hydraulic rig which makes it move. This makes it pretty realistic and can simulate turbulence, hard landings, engine fires, fire in the cabin etc.

In addition to this we also went through courses in first aid, CRM (crew resource management), flight safety, FMS (flight management system) and then some.

Monday supernumary was on the schedule. Why it´s called supernumary, nobody seems to know, but it´s a day as an observer on the jumpseat to see the theory in work. I flew Bodø-Narvik-Bodø-Svolvær-Bodø in the afternoon, so I took the morning flight up from Oslo. Earlier in the course I had another day as an observer (more or less by own initiative), where I got to experience middle part of Norway (Bodø-Mosjøen-Namsos-Værnes-Mosjøen-Mo i Rana-Bodø). Things are happening pretty fast, but fortunately I´m used to short sectors from Scotland.

Next weekend I´ll fly back up to Bodø for two days in the mockup (cardboard cockpit to practice procedures). This is to save time in the simualtor (which costs alot of money). After the two days in the mockup, Marius and I will travel down to Gardermoen to start the simulator training.
